Chapter Seventeen

She was gone. He had no idea where she had gone. Or how she had managed it, but after three days of her absence, even from Quinn’s spy cams he had to admit she was no longer at Oasis. He just had no idea what it meant. Had she run from him? Or had something else happened? The wondering was killing him.

With his abilities he could usually outmaneuver any situation, but he would be the first to admit that it had its draw backs. One being he could very easily imagine every worst-case scenario. The other being that if he did not employ his ability he missed things. For instance her leaving had blindsided him, something that rarely happened.

What it all meant was that he needed to know if she had gone on her own, or if something else was happening here. Knowing that she was out there and not where he could protect her was slowly driving him out of his mind. Which, if he took the time to examine it was ridiculous for numerous reasons. One being that while he had watched her quite a bit since he had been on Fortitude, they had not had too many actual conversations. So feeling so much so quickly was surprising. There was also the fact that the woman was powerful enough to take care of herself. Probably against everyone but his own Council.

Which left him with more questions. Was she taken? And by whom? Or did she run from him? Either way she was gone. Quinn’s spies had traced her to the spaceport but could not find which ship she had boarded, or where she was headed, but they did confirm one thing for him. She was no longer on Fortitude, or if she was still on the planet, they couldn’t find her.

Her staff went along as if nothing was wrong. That at least was reassuring, despite the frustration of dealing with them.

Nik was giving him cold blade sharp looks that cut but ignoring his questions with a gleam in her eyes as if she found his continued presence amusing. As if his clear mounting frustration was humorous. The woman had no protective instincts as far as he could see, or she would not court the rage he was ready to unleash on her so readily.

“I need to know that she is safe, at least,” he growled. “Just tell me you know for a fact that she went voluntarily.” Because not knowing if she was safe was as bad as not knowing where she was. Knowing that she had run from him.

Nik raised a brow at his imperious tone and crossed her arms. Tolis found himself grinding his teeth at the stubborn look on her face and her tightly pressed lips.

He forced a semblance of calm when all he wanted to do was lunge over the front desk and wring her scrawny neck for his answers. The only thing that stopped him was Sasha’s probable reaction to it. She would never forgive him if he hurt her staff.
